Description

What Is the Omega Air A-DRY 60 BM and How Does It Work

A-DRY 60 BM is a heatless regeneration adsorption dryer manufactured by Omega Air d.o.o. (Ljubljana, Slovenia, founded 1992). The BM (Breathing air Medical) variant is a specialised version for producing breathing air, medical air, and air for critical industrial applications.

A-DRY 60 BM model designation decoded:

Field Meaning
A-DRY Adsorption DRYer — A series (compact, 6–200 Nm³/h)
60 Nominal capacity: 60 Nm³/h at 7 bar, 35°C, PDP −40°C
BM Breathing air Medical — certified to EN 12021

Operating principle. The dryer contains two columns packed with molecular sieve desiccant. Wet compressed air enters the first column where the molecular sieve adsorbs water vapour — the dew point drops to −40°C. Simultaneously the second column regenerates: a small portion of already dried air (15–20%) expands to atmospheric pressure, becoming extremely dry, and purges the saturated desiccant, removing moisture from it. After 5 minutes the columns swap roles.

A timer controller manages the switching cycle: 5 min adsorption + 4 min regeneration + 1 min pressure equalisation = 10-minute cycle. With a dew point sensor connected (option) the adsorption phase extends based on actual desiccant saturation, reducing average purge losses to below 3–5%.

BM series differences from standard A-DRY:

  • Desiccant — medical-grade 13X molecular sieve (enhanced performance at low moisture concentrations)
  • Body and seal construction meets breathing air contact requirements
  • Standard configuration includes coalescing pre-filter (0.01 mg/m³ oil) and particulate after-filter (ISO 8573-1 class 1)
  • Documentation and certification compatible with EN 12021, ISO 8573-1 class 1-2-1

💡 Expert tip: the nominal capacity of 60 Nm³/h is stated for the following conditions: 7 bar, inlet temperature 35°C, outlet pressure dew point −40°C. At deviations from these conditions apply correction factors: at 6 bar pressure — factor 0.93 (actual capacity 55.8 Nm³/h); at inlet temperature 40°C — factor 0.90 (54 Nm³/h). If your compressor delivers air hotter than 35°C — install an aftercooler or refrigeration pre-dryer upstream of the A-DRY 60 BM; otherwise desiccant service life will be reduced 2–3 times.

⚠️ Important: when selecting an alternative for BM-category applications (breathing air), confirm that the alternative is certified for that use. Standard adsorption dryer versions do not always comply with EN 12021 regarding seal materials and desiccant type.

5 mandatory parameters for selecting an adsorption dryer:

  1. Corrected capacity. Calculate actual air demand, add 15–20% purge losses, and compare against nominal capacity at your operating conditions.
  2. Required dew point. −40°C — standard for most industrial applications. −70°C — for electronics, pharmaceutical, laser optics.
  3. System working pressure. A-DRY 60 BM: 4–16 bar.
  4. Inlet air temperature. Must not exceed 50°C. If higher — install an aftercooler.
  5. Application class. Standard industrial applications → base A-DRY series. Breathing air, medical, fire safety → BM series.

Expert Opinion

“A-DRY 60 BM is not just a dryer — it is a compressed air quality assurance system for critical applications. The key differentiator of the BM series is not only the dew point; it is the entire quality confirmation cycle: documentation to EN 12021, materials in contact with breathing air, specialist desiccant. When someone comes to me with a breathing air drying requirement and reaches for the standard A-DRY series — that’s an error. The standard series physically achieves the same dew point, but it is not certified for that application. The difference lies in the details: desiccant type, seals, documentation. In critical applications, details determine everything.”

  • EN 12021 — breathing air for self-contained apparatus

How to Select the Right Adsorption Dryer: 6-Step Guide

  1. Determine the required dew point. −40°C — standard for most industrial processes, preventing condensate at −30°C ambient. −70°C — for electronics, laser optics, pharmaceuticals.
  2. Calculate actual air demand. Sum consumption of all users + safety factor 1.25. Add 15–20% purge losses: for a demand of 48 Nm³/h a dryer rated minimum 58 Nm³/h is required.
  3. Determine working pressure. A-DRY 60 BM: 4–16 bar. If system pressure differs from 7 bar — apply the capacity correction factor.
  4. Check inlet air temperature. Must be ≤50°C. If the compressor delivers hot air — install an aftercooler or refrigeration pre-dryer.
  5. Determine the application class. Standard industrial applications → base A-DRY series. Breathing air, medical, fire safety → BM series.
  6. Plan maintenance. Scheduled replacement: purge silencers — every 12 months, control valves — every 24 months, desiccant — every 3–5 years depending on inlet air quality.

FAQ

❓ What is the difference between the A-DRY BM series and the standard A-DRY series?

Both series use the same operating principle and have similar technical characteristics regarding dew point. The key BM differences: medical-grade desiccant (13X molecular sieve), body and seal materials suitable for breathing air contact, documentation and certification to EN 12021. For standard industrial applications — the base A-DRY series. For breathing air, medical, and fire safety applications — BM only.

❓ How often does the desiccant need replacing in the Omega Air A-DRY 60 BM?

Under correct operation (working pressure ≥4 bar, inlet air temperature ≤50°C, coalescing pre-filter installed) the calculated desiccant service life is 3–5 years. Signs that replacement is required: rising outlet dew point above the acceptable level (if a sensor is connected). Desiccant is replaced in cartridges without pouring loose material and without specialist tools.

❓ Where can I buy the Omega Air A-DRY 60 BM in Moldova?

The Problem You’ve Already Faced

  • A refrigeration dryer can’t reach the required dew point. Refrigeration dryers achieve a pressure dew point no lower than +3°C. Processes requiring −40°C or below (laser cutting, pharmaceuticals, breathing air, electronics) need an adsorption dryer.
  • Breathing air doesn’t comply with EN 12021. EN 12021 for breathing air used in self-contained breathing apparatus, medical systems, and firefighting equipment requires residual moisture content significantly below ISO 8573-1 class 1. Only the Omega Air BM series is certified for these requirements.
  • Condensate destroys pneumatic tools and equipment. Working outdoors in winter or in cold workshops, even a +3°C dew point means condensation — tools freeze, valves seize. A-DRY 60 BM delivers −40°C — condensation is eliminated even at −30°C ambient temperature.
  • Unclear how large the actual purge losses are. A-DRY 60 BM operates in timer or sensor-controlled mode; with a dew point sensor (option) average purge losses drop below 10%. Without a sensor — 15–20%.
  • Desiccant replacement is lengthy and complicated. Omega Air A-DRY uses desiccant in replaceable cartridges — replacement without pouring loose material, without specialist tools.

A correctly selected adsorption dryer guarantees air quality throughout the service life of your equipment, not only at rated conditions.
