A Problem You’ve Already Faced
- The FL-24/FL-40 compressor overheats and wears out quickly — a clogged or missing air filter lets dust and abrasive particles directly into the cylinder: piston rings and valve plates wear out 2–3 times faster than normal.
- The compressor “chokes” — output drops — a blocked filter element creates inlet resistance: the motor runs under increased load, actual output drops and the receiver fills more slowly.
- The original filter housing cracked or broke — the plastic «snail» housing can crack from vibration or an accidental knock; running without a filter even for a few hours allows dust into the cylinder.
- Can’t find the right size — there are many «similar» filters on the market with a different diameter or thread; a 3/8″ filter will not fit in a 1/2″ port without an adapter.

What Is the Compressor Air Filter Assembly
The FL-24/FL-40 air filter is an intake filter fitted to the suction port of the piston block. Atmospheric air passes through the filter element before entering the cylinder, which captures dust, mechanical particles and abrasives. Clean air contains no particles that would scratch the cylinder bore and piston rings.
«Assembly» means the set includes both components:
- Housing («snail») — plastic, 90 mm OD, with a 1/2″ male thread for screwing into the block port. The «snail» shape provides a cyclonic effect — coarse particles settle on the housing walls before reaching the filter element.
- Filter element (cartridge) — foam or non-woven filter media that captures fine dust and abrasive particles. A consumable item to be replaced every 300–500 operating hours.

💡 Expert tip: do not clean the filter element — replace it. After blowing out with compressed air or washing, the foam loses pore uniformity: fine abrasive particles pass through the «cleaned» areas straight into the cylinder. The cost of a new cartridge is far less than repairing the piston group. Keep 2–3 cartridges in stock.

⚠️ Important when selecting: before ordering, check the thread of the suction port on the compressor block. Forte direct-drive compressors use two thread sizes: 1/2″ (20 mm) for FL-24/FL-40, and 3/8″ (15 mm) for some other models. The 3/8″ filter is a different part number.

How to Replace the Air Filter: 4 Steps
- Stop the compressor — wait for the motor to stop completely, disconnect from the mains.
- Unscrew the filter housing — by hand, anti-clockwise (no tools needed): the plastic housing unscrews easily.
- Remove and replace the filter element — discard the old cartridge, fit a new one. Do not blow out or wash the old element.
- Refit the housing — screw on by hand until snug, without over-tightening. Start the compressor and verify there are no unusual sounds at the intake.

❓ How often should the FL-24/FL-40 air filter be replaced?
Under normal conditions — every 300–500 operating hours or once every 6–12 months. In heavily dusty environments (woodworking shops, construction sites, stone workshops) the interval shortens to 200–300 hours. Visual indicator: the filter element has turned grey or black — replace immediately, without waiting for the scheduled interval.
❓ Is the FL-24/FL-40 filter only compatible with Forte compressors?
No. Compatible with all direct-drive piston compressors with a 1/2″ male (20 mm) suction port thread and a 90 mm mounting diameter: Forte FL-24/FL-40, Wert 24 and their equivalents. If your compressor is a different brand — check the thread and the mounting diameter.
❓ Can the filter element be cleaned instead of replaced?
Not recommended.
