How the SCF 06 Differs from a Flow Control Valve with Check Valve (ASC)
This is the key difference that determines the correct choice:
| Parameter | SCF 06 (this model) | ASC 06 (with check valve) |
|---|---|---|
| Throttle direction | Both directions equally | One direction only (check valve allows free flow in reverse) |
| Check valve | None | Yes — built-in |
| Cylinder control | Controls both extension and retraction speed | Controls only one direction |
| Typical application | In-line flow restriction, timer delay circuits, general flow limiting | Exhaust flow control of a pneumatic cylinder |
| Mounting position | Anywhere in line | Directly at the cylinder port |
💡 Expert tip: if you need to control the stroke speed of a pneumatic cylinder — choose the check valve flow control ASC, mounted directly at the cylinder port. The SCF without a check valve is used when equal flow restriction in both directions is required: for valve actuation delays, peak flow limiting in a circuit, gradual vessel filling and pneumatic logic circuits.

How the In-Line Throttle Works
Inside the SCF 06 body is a needle sleeve with a conical working surface. Rotating the adjustment screw changes the flow area between the needle and the seat — from fully open to fully closed.
The lock nut allows the chosen setting to be secured against inadvertent displacement from equipment vibration.
Adjustment procedure:
- Loosen the lock nut
- Gently screw in the adjustment screw to the fully closed position (without forcing)
- Open by the required number of turns (typically start with 1–2 turns)
- Run the system and check the actuation speed
- Fine-tune the setting, then tighten the lock nut
Applications
Valve and logic element actuation delays
- Implementing time delays in pneumatic circuits without electrical timers
- Adjusting the fill time of valve pilot chambers
- Building pneumatic timers from reservoir and throttle combinations
General in-line flow restriction
- Limiting peak flow on a pneumatic line segment
- Balancing parallel branches of a system
- Reducing pressure surge when valves switch rapidly
Pneumatic automation systems
- Controlling the fill rate of pneumatic muscles (PAM)
- Flow restriction in vacuum cup systems
- Setting the response time of pneumatic pressure sensors

Expert Opinion
“The most common mistake when selecting a throttle valve is choosing an SCF (no check valve) where an ASC (with check valve) is needed, or vice versa. The SCF restricts flow equally in both directions — it belongs wherever you need to limit flow regardless of direction: delays, line balancing, peak flow limiting. The ASC belongs directly at the cylinder port, when you want to control only the extension speed or only the retraction speed and let the opposite direction run freely. Mixing them up means either the cylinder will move slowly in both directions instead of one, or the delay circuit will not behave as intended.”

FAQ
❓ What is the difference between SCF 06 and SCF 08?
Only the tube diameter: SCF 06 — for 6 mm OD tube; SCF 08 — for 8 mm OD tube. All other specifications are identical (pressure, temperature, operating principle). Measure the outside diameter of your tube with a calliper before ordering.
❓ Can the SCF 06 be fully closed to stop all flow?
Yes, mechanically it can be closed. However, using a throttle valve as an isolation valve is not recommended: the needle seal is not designed for prolonged full-closure under pressure. For complete isolation use a dedicated shut-off valve (ball valve or push-button valve).
❓ Is PTFE tape needed when installing the SCF 06?
No — both ends are Push-In collet connections: the tube simply presses in until it clicks, with no threads or separate seals. To disconnect, press the release sleeve and pull the tube.
