Upper Spray Gun Cup Replacement — 500 ml, M14×1.5 Male Thread, Plastic

Universal replacement upper spray gun cup with a capacity of 500 ml, made from transparent plastic. Thread M14×1.5 Male — the standard for most HVLP and LVLP pneumatic spray guns with a gravity-feed (upper) cup. The transparent body lets you monitor paint level without stopping work. The lid with sealing gasket ensures a leak-free connection when the gun is tilted. Compatible with DeVilbiss, Sata, Iwata, Walcom, Sparmax, Jas, and most professional Chinese-made spray guns with M14 thread.

Description

Gravity (Upper) Cup vs Suction (Lower) Cup: The Difference and When You Need the Upper Type

Spray guns are made with two fundamentally different paint delivery systems:

Parameter Gravity cup / Upper (this model) Suction cup / Lower
Paint delivery By gravity Under pressure via siphon tube
Working at an angle Requires care (paint may spill) Free orientation in any direction
Capacity Usually 150–600 ml 600–1000 ml and more
Cleaning Faster — smaller system volume Siphon tube must also be cleaned
Application Small parts, detailing, auto bodywork Large surfaces, full panels
Paint level visibility Transparent body — visible at a glance Metal — lid must be removed to check

The 500 ml upper cup is the optimum volume for most spray painting jobs: enough for a single panel or small surface, and small enough for quick cleaning and colour changes.

Which Spray Guns Are Compatible: Thread Compatibility Check

The M14×1.5 Male thread is the most widely used standard for professional gravity-feed spray guns.

Compatible spray guns (M14×1.5 male thread on cup):

  • DeVilbiss GTi, PLUS, GFG, Sri Pro series
  • Sata jet, minijet, NR, RP series
  • Iwata LPH, W, WS series
  • Walcom Slim, Genesi, Gun series
  • Sparmax GP, DH series
  • Jas 1220, 1221, 1222 series
  • Most professional Chinese HVLP/LVLP spray guns with upper cup

⚠️ Verify the thread before ordering. Some spray guns use M16×1.5 (larger thread) or non-standard sizes. The most reliable check — measure the outer diameter of the thread on your old cup’s neck: M14 = approximately 14 mm outer diameter.

When to Replace the Cup: 5 Common Situations

1. The cup is cracked or broken Plastic becomes brittle over time from solvent contact. A crack in the body means paint leakage, fumes, and the inability to maintain proper suction for feed. Replacing the cup is far cheaper than replacing the whole gun.

2. The cup neck thread is stripped or cross-threaded With frequent screwing and unscrewing, the plastic M14 thread gradually wears. If the cup wobbles on the gun or has started leaking at the thread — time to replace.

3. Colour change without flushing the main cup A professional technique: keep several cups, each loaded with its own colour. Colour change = swap the cup in 10 seconds instead of a full system flush.

4. Working with different material types A dedicated cup for primer, one for basecoat, one for clearcoat — prevents cross-contamination between materials.

5. Working with small paint volumes 500 ml is the exact volume for one repair zone (bumper, wing, door). No need to mix paint “with extra” and dispose of the remainder.

Care and Maintenance

Material compatibility The transparent plastic cup is compatible with most water-based paints, acrylic lacquers, and most organic solvents during short-term use. Not recommended for prolonged storage of nitro thinners, MEK, or chlorinated solvents — these degrade the plastic.

Cleaning after use Clean the cup immediately after use — do not allow paint or lacquer to dry on the walls. Dried enamel or lacquer is difficult to remove from a plastic body without risk of damage. Use a solvent compatible with the cup material.

Lid seal Before each use, check the condition of the lid’s sealing gasket. A cracked or deformed gasket causes paint leakage at the thread and air ingress into the feed system.

Storage Store the cup clean, with paint removed and the lid open — this prevents plastic degradation from solvent vapours and extends seal service life.

5 Reasons to Buy a Spare Cup Right Now

1. Colour change in 10 seconds Professional painters work with multiple cups simultaneously: each cup holds its own colour or material. Colour change = unscrew and refit. No flushing between panels.

2. Cheaper than flushing the main cup Flushing a full 500 ml cup uses 100–200 ml of thinner. For frequent colour changes, multiple cups save both time and consumables.

3. Backup cup in case of failure A cracked cup mid-job on a full panel means a lost day. A spare cup fixes the problem in minutes with no downtime.

4. Precise paint measurement The transparent body with graduation marks lets you mix exactly the amount of material needed for a specific panel — no waste and no leftover disposal.

5. Hygiene when switching between paint systems Acrylic and nitro, waterborne and solvent-borne — never mix. Separate cups eliminate cross-contamination when switching coating systems.

Expert Opinion

“500 ml is the most popular size for an auto body repair workshop. It’s just right for one zone: a bumper, door, or bonnet. And the cleanup is seconds — just unscrew and fit the next one. Each of my painters keeps 3–4 cups in rotation: one for primer, one for base, one for clear, and one being cleaned. The one thing to check when buying is the thread. M14×1.5 is the standard, but there are guns with M16 or non-standard threads. Just measure the old cup with a vernier calliper across the outside of the threaded neck: if it reads approximately 14 mm — get the M14.”

FAQ

❓ Is this cup compatible with the DeVilbiss GTi Pro? The DeVilbiss GTi Pro uses M14×1.5 thread on the upper cup — this model is compatible. However, DeVilbiss also makes versions with a Quick Release system — those are not compatible with a threaded cup. Check the cup attachment type on your specific gun.

❓ Can this cup be used with nitro paints and nitro thinners? For short-term contact during a working session — permissible. For prolonged storage of nitro thinners in a plastic cup (more than 1–2 hours), plastic degradation, clouding, and loss of strength may occur. We recommend cleaning the cup immediately after use.

❓ Is the lid included? Yes, the lid with sealing gasket is included. Lid thread: internal M14×1.5, compatible with the neck of this cup.

❓ How do I confirm that my spray gun has M14×1.5 and not a different thread? Measure the outer diameter of your old cup’s threaded neck with a vernier calliper. M14 = ~14 mm outer thread diameter. If the diameter is approximately 16 mm — it is M16 and this model will not fit. You can also try gently threading on without tightening: if it runs smoothly and without resistance — it’s compatible.

❓ Can the lid be purchased separately without the cup? The lid for this cup is sold separately. Check availability with an Acvatron SRL manager: +373 22 503-580.
